What's On

The Parent Centre aims to provide a service for parents that is preventive in nature. A service that is sufficiently non-threatening that parents feel able to seek the support and help they need timeously, before problems become entrenched.

Staff include professionally trained and indigenous facilitators and counsellors, all of whom have parenting experience. The counsellors are either registered social workers or psychologists who have had counselling and clinical input.

Social Work or Psychology qualifications are not essential for group and workshop facilitation but will be an advantage. Potential staff are carefully screened for the following: warmth, empathy, group skills, a non-judgmental attitude, confidence, flexibility, reliability, integrity, self-awareness, a willingness to contribute to the team and a sense of humour.

We look for staff who believe that others have the ability to change and direct their own lives constructively.

An in depth interview is conducted by the Director and other senior staff of the Centre to establish the applicant’s view on parenting, his/her value system and views on alternative life styles and key issues. The purpose of this is to determine whether the applicant identifies with the approach and philosophy of Parent Centre. The Centre is non-aligned and works within a universal context so that nobody feels excluded.

Staff are required to undergo:

Join us for an interesting programme dealing with moms and babies.

We value your input as this is your group and we want to cater for your needs.

While we know that Moms enjoy and benefit greatly from the talks and speakers, it is so helpful for Mothers to get out and to meet other Mothers, to relax and socialize while sharing valuable and useful information, hints and tips with each other. We feel that this part of the morning is just as valuable and helpful and such special and supportive friendships and bonds are made at this precious time of ones life, which is why we encourage Moms to swop phone numbers and to get together during the week as well.

MOMS-TO-BE and MOMS-AND-BABIES GROUP
As from 2009, the Parent Centre MOMS-AND-BABIES GROUP will be known as the MOMS-TO-BE and MOMS-AND-BABIES GROUP.
Every effort is being made to attract pregnant Moms to the group so that once the baby is born, they have a support system in place and they will continue to attend the group as soon as they are up and about and feel they are able to join in again.
We have found that so many Moms go back to work after about 4 months of maternity leave.
By the time they have surfaced after the baby is born and realized there is a support group, they have about 5 weeks before they go back to work.
So many Moms have expressed such disappointment at realizing that this valuable resource was available to them, had they known about it timeously.
There is so much stress during maternity leave, a time which should be such a special and meaningful bonding time - many Moms do not have relatives closeby and they feel isolated and alone. It is our sincere hope that if pregnant Moms join in, they will have information and resources at their fingertips when they need it most.
The other group members can be of great help to these Moms – they are so encouraging, motivating and affirming and share their ideas and experiences willingly.
It is incumbent on us to move with the times and to offer our services to Moms at this stage of their journey INTO motherhood.

Please assist us to spread the word about this - it would really be appreciated.
We want all Moms-to-be and Moms-and babies in Cape Town to know about us.
Everyone is assured of a warm welcome.
The group is held at the Kingsbury Hospital, Maternity section 2nd floor, Wilderness Road Claremont, every Thursday between 10 am and 12 noon.
It is R 35 for the morning including refreshments.

Programme for March 2010
4 March - Clea from Baby Hands will talk about teaching babies to do signing. In this way you are able to learn their cues and to attend to their needs appropriately. She will also do a Sign and Rhyme Demonstration which the babies will enjoy.
Some Moms in the group requested a talk on this subject so come along and learn more about it and perhaps enrol for one of the courses.

11 March - Dr B is a Paediatrician who offered to talk to the Moms on ‘ Stimulating Babies’. The talk was so informative and interesting and again, other Moms have requested to hear the talk as well and we are very pleased that Dr B has agreed to give the talk again at our group for new Moms who have joined in this year.

18 March - Gayle from ‘Sunshine Health” will talk on antenatal yoga classes , where Moms learn breathing and relaxation techniques to assist during pregnancy and labour. Gayle will also tell us about the Mom and Baby Yoga classes for babies from 3 weeks old: this involves stretching exercises for Mom with baby to reconnect to your body. Our Moms who have attended, have really enjoyed these classes.

25 March - Helen from the Parent Centre will talk on “ Raising Boys’. The Parent Centre has a workshop on this subject which is very popular and most educational and informative for Parents of Sons and she will give us a talk on this subject so that those that are interested in learning more, can register for the workshop.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS - on ETV on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays - 11.30 am – 12.30pm - this programme is especially for Moms with babies.

CAPE TOWNS CHILD MAGAZINE is available at the end of each month at Bargain Books.

Some of the Moms are planning to go to the MOMS AND BABIES MORNING at Canal Walk – this is on the first Monday of each month. Register on line on the Canal Walks website and more information is available there.
