We started working with fathers as a distinct group of parents and caregivers 4 years ago. The work started slowly with short workshops of one session that focused mainly on the roles of fathers. Since then it has expanded to include the Parenting and Leadership component. Two groups of fathers received training in Mitchell's Plain and Hanover Park. We have 3 male staff members who do this very important work.
Fatherhood in rural communities. A partnership with the Department of Social Development enabled us to train men in the rural districts of Worcester, Lambert's Bay, Eerste River, the Strand, Caledon and Grabouw. The purpose was to empower them to train, support and mentor other fathers. We worked very closely with a a group called "The Hearts of Men" and the district offices of the Department of Social Development in the areas mentioned.
Sixty seven men received training and most of them are currently implementing what they learnt and spreading the messages of the importance of fatherhood involvment in children's lives and positive parenting to other fathers. We are providing mentoring and support to the trainees through refresher workshops and support meetings.
Credit must go to our facilitators Errol Valentine, Charles Lunga George ,Ian Matroos and Shuabe Salie for their commitment and passion. We want to thank Shuabe Salie for the sterling work he is doing by maintaining contact with the trainees, meeting with them and providing refresher training. He has been travelling to all the areas mentioned for this purpose.
